A PFD is your most important piece of equipment. We always recommend getting a comfortable one that you’ll wear because accidents are never planned. Coast Guard requires that all vessels carry PFDs. For kayaks, the PFD has to be easily accessible, meaning it can’t be stashed in a hatch somewhere getting all mildewy or moldy. Coast Guard also requires that kids 12 years and under wear a life jacket at all times. And it must be a Coast Guard approved PFD (surprisingly, a lot of kid’s life jackets are not Coast Guard approved!).
